God’
Purpose for Man
Oftentimes, we confuse God’s purpose with our rationale or our ability to comprehend. Sometimes our purpose will change as we live and/or progress through life and what life has to offer.
We must understand that God is:
U Omnipresent-this means that He is everywhere all of the time, there is no place without Him and nothing can exist without Him.
U Omniscient-this means that He knows everything, there is nothing that can happen that was not foreknown; a bird can not fall to the ground without His prior knowledge and acceptance.
U Eternal-this means that He has always existed and always will exist. He is not confined to time and space.
U Sovereign-this means that there is no higher authority. He can do what He wills.
I have often heard the following statement, “God created man so that He could save him.” Sovereign God could have created man to be saved eternally by not decreeing free will. But He chose to create man with decree free will. Similar statements have been made and they all primarily pointed to a deficiency in God. God has no deficiency; He is PERFECT so we should readily discount any attempt to show that He has a need. Man on the other hand has been created with need. We need:
¨ Air to breathe
¨ Water and food to live
¨ Shelter
¨ Love and to belong
¨ To feel important or pertinent
I could go on and on with the need of man,
but suffice it to know that we are not God and we find it difficult to think in
terms that are hard to comprehend. We
tend to think of God in terms of being like man.
Webster defines purpose as:
¨ Something set up as an object or end to be attained
¨ An intention
¨
A subject under discussion or an action in
course of execution
Typically, we use purpose for something
other than an end. If you like
sports and enjoy a game or two on television, you will often hear a color
analyst for the NFL say that a play was designed for two yards.
No one in their right mind would design something to fail; the object is
to score so plays should be designed to score; however, because of our inability
to execute at 100% all of the time, we accept such terminology.
And this acceptance mentality shapes how we view things.
God is omnipotent which means He has the
power to do whatsoever He wills. So
His purpose in creation is not and
can never be a failure.
Eph 3:1-21 For this cause I Paul,
the prisoner of Jesus Christ for you Gentiles, If ye have heard of the
dispensation of the grace of God which is given me to you-ward: How that by
revelation he made known unto me the mystery; (as I wrote afore in few words,
Whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ)
Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now
revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit;
That the Gentiles should be fellowheirs, and of the same body, and
partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel: Whereof I was made a minister,
according to the gift of the grace of God given unto me by the effectual working
of his power. Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace
given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of
Christ; And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which
from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by
Jesus Christ: To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in
heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God,
According to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord: In
whom we have boldness and access with confidence by the faith of him. Wherefore
I desire that ye faint not at my tribulations for you, which is your glory. For
this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Of whom the
whole family in heaven and earth is named, That he would grant you, according to
the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the
inner man; That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted
and grounded in love,
May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and
length, and depth, and height; And to know the love of Christ, which passeth
knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God. Now unto him
that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think,
according to the power that worketh in us, Unto him be glory in the church by
Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen. (KJV)
2 Cor 1:17-18 When I therefore
was thus minded, did I use lightness? or the things that I purpose, do I purpose
according to the flesh, that with me there should be yea yea, and nay nay? But
as God is true, our word toward you was not yea and nay. (KJV)
Rom 8:27-32
And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit,
because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God. And
we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them
who are the called according to his purpose. For whom he did foreknow, he also
did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the
firstborn among many brethren. Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also
called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them
he also glorified.
What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be
against us? He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how
shall he not with him also freely give us all things?(KJV)
Eph 1:1-23 Paul, an apostle of
Jesus Christ by the will of God, to the saints which are at Ephesus, and to the
faithful in Christ Jesus: Grace be to you, and peace, from God our Father, and
from the Lord Jesus Christ. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus
Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in
Christ:
According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world,
that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: Having
predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself,
according to the good pleasure of his will, To the praise of the glory of his
grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved. In whom we have
redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches
of his grace; Wherein he hath abounded toward us in all wisdom and prudence;
Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good
pleasure which he hath purposed in himself: That in the dispensation of the
fulness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both
which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him: In whom also we have
obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who
worketh all things after the counsel of his own will: That we should be to the
praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ.
In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the
gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed
with that holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest of our inheritance until
the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.
Wherefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus, and love unto
all the saints, Cease not to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my
prayers; That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give
unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: The eyes
of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of
his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,
And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe,
according to the working of his mighty power,
Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him
at his own right hand in the heavenly places, Far above all principality, and
power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this
world, but also in that which is to come: And hath put all things under his
feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church, Which is his
body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all. (KJV)
Eccl 3:1-11 To every thing there
is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:A time to be born, and
a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;
A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to
build up; A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to
dance; A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time
to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; A time to get, and a time to
lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; A time to rend, and a time to
sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; A time to love, and a time to
hate; a time of war, and a time of peace. What profit hath he that worketh in
that wherein he laboureth? I have seen the travail, which God hath given to the
sons of men to be exercised in it. He hath made every thing beautiful in his
time: also he hath set the world in their heart, so that no man can find out the
work that God maketh from the beginning to the end.
Isaiah 14:24-27 The LORD of hosts hath
sworn, saying, Surely as I have thought, so shall it come to pass; and as I have
purposed, so shall it stand: That I will break the Assyrian in my land,
and upon my mountains tread him under foot: then shall his yoke depart from off
them, and his burden depart from off their shoulders. This is the purpose that
is purposed upon the whole earth: and this is the hand that is stretched out
upon all the nations. For the LORD of hosts hath purposed, and who shall
disannul it? and his hand is stretched out, and who shall turn it back? (KJV)
Acts 26:15-16 And I said, Who art thou,
Lord? And he said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest.
But rise, and stand upon thy feet: for I have appeared unto thee for this
purpose, to make thee a minister and a witness both of these things which thou
hast seen, and of those things in the which I will appear unto thee; (KJV)
2 Tim 1:1-18 Paul, an apostle of Jesus
Christ by the will of God, according to the promise of life which is in Christ
Jesus, To Timothy, my dearly beloved son: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the
Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
I thank God, whom I serve from my forefathers with pure conscience, that
without ceasing I have remembrance of thee in my prayers night and day;
Greatly desiring to see thee, being mindful of thy tears, that I may be
filled with joy; When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee,
which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am
persuaded that in thee also. Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir
up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands. For God hath
not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his
prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the
power of God; Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not
according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was
given us in Christ Jesus before the world began, But is now made manifest by the
appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath
brought life and immortality to light through the gospel:
Whereunto I am appointed a preacher, and an apostle, and a teacher of the
Gentiles. For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not
ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to
keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.
Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith
and love which is in Christ Jesus. That good thing which was committed unto thee
keep by the Holy Ghost which dwelleth in us. This thou knowest, that all they
which are in Asia be turned away from me; of whom are Phygellus and Hermogenes.
The Lord give mercy unto the house of Onesiphorus; for he oft refreshed me, and
was not ashamed of my chain: But, when he was in Rome, he sought me out very
diligently, and found me. The Lord grant unto him that he may find mercy of the
Lord in that day: and in how many things he ministered unto me at Ephesus, thou
knowest very well. (KJV)
I Jn 3:8 He that committeth sin is of the
devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God
was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. (KJV)
Matt 5:13-14 Ye are the salt of
the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted?
it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under
foot of men. Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot
be hid. (KJV)
Eph 2:1-10
And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;
Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world,
according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in
the children of disobedience: Among whom also we all had our conversation in
times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of
the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others. But God, who
is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, Even when we were
dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)
And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in
Christ Jesus: That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his
grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus. For by grace are ye saved
through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works,
lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus
unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. (KJV)
Eph 3:9-12 And to make all men
see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world
hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ: To the intent that
now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the
church the manifold wisdom of God,
According to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our
Lord: In whom we have boldness and access with confidence by the faith of him.
(KJV)
Phil 2:13 For it is God which
worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure. (KJV)
Col
3:12-25 Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of
mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;
Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a
quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. And above all
these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness. And let the peace
of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be
ye thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell
in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and
hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. And
whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving
thanks to God and the Father by him. Wives,
submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord. Husbands,
love your wives, and be not bitter against them. Children, obey your parents in
all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord. Fathers, provoke not your
children to anger, lest they be discouraged. Servants, obey in all things your
masters according to the flesh; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in
singleness of heart, fearing God: And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to
the Lord, and not unto men; Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward
of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ. But he that doeth wrong shall
receive for the wrong which he hath done: and there is no respect of persons. (KJV)
Heb 12:1-2 Wherefore seeing we also are
compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every
weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience
the race that is set before us, Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of
our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising
the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. (KJV)

Pet 3:13-18 And who is he that will harm you, if ye be followers of that which
is good? But and if ye suffer for righteousness' sake, happy are ye: and be not
afraid of their terror, neither be troubled; But sanctify the Lord God in your
hearts: and be ready always to give an
answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with
meekness and fear: Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of
you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good
conversation in Christ. For it is
better, if the will of God be so, that ye suffer for well doing, than for evil
doing. For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust,
that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by
the Spirit: (KJV)
Now, lets examine the next passage as we move to the conclusion:
Rev 21:1-7 And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful. And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely. He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son. (KJV)
The fact that there is a new Heaven and a
new Earth suggests that there is something wrong with the first one (the one
that we are residing in now), Genesis 3:17 tells us that the ground was cursed
for Adam’s sake; Adam and Eve were removed from the Garden of Eden, Cain was
removed from the sight of his parents and the spread of sin in the material
creation began. Sin was judged in Genesis 6-9 with the flood and in Genesis
10-11 we see sin and judgment spread to the nations.
God is holy and can not be in the presence of sin so God and only God
could solve the problem. We see
temporary resolutions throughout the Old Testament, which were meant to teach us
that an eternal solution was required. An
eternal solution to an everlasting problem required an eternal sacrifice to
bring forth new creatures which were like the first Adam prior to sin.
Remember that we are still addressing the fact that God must have had a
purpose in creation. There was no more sea; the word, sea in its prophetic sense
refers to the instability of creation especially man, the last phrase in verse 1
states that there was no more sea. Now
in this verse we see the existence of a holy/perfect material creation just as
it had been created initially. In verse 2, we see a holy city prepared as a bride coming
from God out of Heaven.
This holy city is the Body of Christ, which has now been perfected by
Jesus Christ. Refer to 1 Peter 2,
the Body of Christ are living stones. There is a great announcement from Heaven:
Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men and He shall dwell with them.
It is God’s purpose that man represents His manifold wisdom to all
creation; this is being done by His Body on earth in time, right now.
God has taken jars of clay and placed a treasure so that the Excellency
of His power is clearly understood by His Grace and through our Hope in Christ
and His finished works. God wanted
to tabernacle with man, but man had to be presentable so That he
might sanctify and cleanse it (His Body) with the washing of water by the word,
That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or
wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. (KJV)
(Ephesians 5:26-27)
God’s desire to fellowship with His creation required that:
¨ Creation would be made perfect without free will (this would take grace away and/or the right to choose)
Or
¨
Creation would require an eternal redemptive
plan in order to conform to His character.
When we read Ephesians 1, we understand that
the decision was made before the material creation that God purposed to place
Himself in creation in order to reconcile Himself to us and giving us the right
to choose whether we wanted to choose to reconcile to Him. Read 2 Corinthians 5
for more on this. Read Romans
8:14-27, God purposed to place grace in all of creation, all of creation is
groaning in travail waiting for the glorious liberty from bondage by the sons of
God.
Conclusion:
In His purpose for creating man, we can now clearly see that the creation of man was to allow God to place Himself in creation so that through His creation of man, He could:
U
Protect His Grace in free
will for all of creation (including angelic creation)
U
Have fellowship and
communion with man
U
Tabernacle with man
U
Demonstrate His manifold
wisdom in all heavenly places and principalities
U Share His love with all of creation
