Rebellion

Devotional Scripture: Exodus 7

My Scripture for text: Isaiah 14:4-8

Subject: Rebellion

Transition: Proverbs 1:7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Introduction: When I preached last month, it was on PRIDE, today I want to talk to you about pride’s kinfolks.  You could say pride’s father, you could say pride’s first cousin or you could say the son of pride, but one certain is certain, pride and rebellion go together.  You can not have righteousness without justice.  You can not have grace without mercy.  Pride begets rebellion.  Rebellion begets pride.

The dictionary defines rebellion as open, organized and armed resistance to a government or ruler; defiance of any authority, control or tradition.

How many in this room are rebellious?

Last month we learned the pride and rebellion of Nebuchanezzar and of his ultimate repentance. Freedom should bring about responsibility and increase in responsibility because of victory and assurance. Gal 5:1 Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.

Loving God wants to give us freedom and assurance,

BUT

We choose to hate and reject love.

Message: A distinction is made between Elohim and Jehovah, same person God The Second Person in the Trinity but now a different role. Ex 6:3; 3:14

Point 1: One of many signs of the rebellious spirit is the hardening of the heart. Ex 5:1-2;

The word harden is 3 different words: hazak- to brace or tighten up; kashah- to make sharp, hard and habed to become heavy

Plague

Consequence

1

Ex. 7:15-16

Water is turned to blood, Pharaoh was informed of the consequence. Pharaoh’s heart was hardened and he went to his house. The magicians enchanted with the same results.

2

Ex. 8:6

Frogs overwhelmed Egypt. Frogs were worshipped as the god of offspring, frogs were in the cooking utensils, etc.  Pharaoh had been informed. The magicians enchanted with the same results. Pharaoh asked Moses to intercede, promised to let Israel go, received mercy and changed his mind (if he planned to do it or not, I think not and the Lord knew that).

3

Ex. 8:16-17

Lice, The magicians enchanted but could not get the same results. Then the people of Egypt asked Pharaoh to let the people go because this is truly Elohim, but Pharaoh’s heart was hardened and he would not let the people go.

4

Ex. 8:20-21

Flies, God told Pharaoh that he would now separate Goshen and Israel from Egypt.  Pharaoh told Moses to go and sacrifice but do it in Egypt. Moses said that Israel will go 3 days into the wilderness and warned Pharaoh not to deceive, but Pharaoh was hardened and would not let the people go.

5

Ex. 8:22-24

Pestilence to the animals came upon Egypt, Pharaoh sent and found that the animals of Goshen were not affected.  His heart was hardened and he refused to let Israel go.

6

Ex. 9:9

Boils, the magicians could not attempt to duplicate this since they were so affected and could not stand before Moses because the boils were so great.  Guess what happened to Pharaoh?

7

Ex. 9:13-14

Plague, pestilence upon the people of Egypt only, Pharaoh had been informed and knew that he had been receiving mercy and grace from Jehovah and had received it so that the whole world may know HIS NAME.

8

Ex. 9:18

Hail, Pharaoh had been informed, all cattle and people should be brought in out of the fields to shelter.  Those believing did so, those not believing left their servants and cattle exposed and were destroyed..  Pharaoh now confesses that he has sinned against Elohim and declared Elohim as righteous and that he and his people were wicked.  He declared that he would let Israel go.  WOW.  But, Moses told Pharaoh that he knew that Pharaoh was lying.  During this hail storm the wheat was not harmed because it was not ready for harvesting.  (Think about some New Testament parables about wheat and tares and seed sowing.) Pharaoh did not  let Israel go, Moses asked how long?

9

Ex. 9:4

Locusts, Pharaoh’s servants begin to question Pharaoh’s wisdom, Pharaoh said go but men only could go

10

Ex. 10:21-11:7

Darkness, compare with Matt 27:45; Jude 1:13; Rev 16:10. No one moved or saw anyone for 3 days. Pharaoh said GO!

God let Israel the easy way away from the Philistines so that they would not become fearful and would not go.

So now what do you think about Pharaoh’s heart?

Lets take one more peep at Exodus 15:18-19 to see Pharaoh’s heart.

Point 2. Go all the way to Acts 9:1-8

Now go back to 1 Samuel 25 and look at Abigail, another sermon but look at her heart, she risked the rebellion against her husband to serve the Lord

Was Pharaoh and Nabal the only ones in the Bible to rebel?

We can live in disobedience, see 2 Tim 2:15; Romans 12:1-2; Ephesians 5:18; 2 Peter 3:18 and Colossians 2.
